I recommend this essay on <a href="http://www.indiana.edu/~wts/pamphlets/thesis_statement.shtml" target="new" rel="nofollow">writing theses</a> to my own students, so I hope it helps you. Choose some narrow, focused aspect of steampunk (one book, one movie, all the works by one "steampunk" author or director, steampunk cosplay as a phenomenon, an "official" essay on "<a href="http://www.tor.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=blog&id=58009" target="new" rel="nofollow">what is steampunk?</a>" or whatever) and say something (1) controversial about it that you can (2) prove by drawing on <em>evidence</em> rather than <em>opinion</em>. Even though I it's around me my whole life, I sometimes think I don't know it at all. =D Anyways, this is my first individual anthropology seminar paper and I'm not quite sure what kind of hypothesis I could use for this research problem (I'm a first year student of social sciences) But I must say it's a very interesting topic and I'm not sure how come I didn't think about it before (when I was doing the research on the steampunk subculture, I found a lot of interesting links on this site. It helped me a lot at understanding steampunk subculture). I will probably focus on it as soon as I figure out how. Any help would really be appreciated. Class and gender are often dealt with in steampunk literature, but race hasn't been addressed so often; and recent controversy over the "Victorientalist fiction" term has highlighted the issue. Seems like a great topic for antho class, to me!
