My Writing Space
I have no idea why my writing space is so tightly crammed in a corner. Either my little loft-office has freakish feng shui or it’s just me that’s freakish. Hmm. The more I look at this photo, the more I think that it’s probably the latter. But it’s the corner that feels most comfortable….
The walls are bare. The whiteboard used to be covered with magnets and photos and junk, but I recently cleared it off to restart. The rest of the loft is fairly empty; there’s an antique camelback trunk in one corner and an antique wood Amberg’s cabinet letter file set against a wall. I know that seems barren, but I don’t need visual distractions when I write. The placement of the desk allows me to look to my left and see out the high window at the treetops and rooftops, and to my right to see just over the edge of the loft wall at the top of the high set of windows for a glimpse of sky, if I need a break from staring at the screen.
Yeah, the more I look at this photo, the more I have to shake my head. Check out the classy modem in the corner, sitting on top of a cardboard box. I really, really need to do something with my work space. Problem is, I don’t want a heavy desk — I prefer a light, easily moved, minimal writing space. The desktop here has been chalkboard-painted so I can write notes to myself. And that chair? Well, I can’t seem to find a comfortable writing chair to save my life. Office chairs are apparently made for tall people; I’m 5’4″, so chair seats are often too deep for me and chair backs tend to curve in exactly the wrong place for my spine. Not that I lean against the back of the chair when I’m writing, anyway. I’m usually hunkered over the laptop. Ergonomics is for wimps. I’ll have Quasimodo’s hunch by the time I die.
Oh, just in case you were a little alarmed by it, the noose is inspiration for my King’s Monster novel.
If any bored interior designer wants to come over and redo my workspace, hey, drop me a line! But I can’t guarantee I’ll come out of the corner.
